PLOT

A clan of heroic night creatures vows to protect modern New York City, continuing their ancient duty from Scotland. In the Dark Ages, a race of warrior monsters known as Gargoyles existed. By day, they were stone statues, but at night, they became living beings. One Scottish clan forged an alliance with humans to safeguard a castle by night in exchange for the humans protecting their stone forms by day. This fragile alliance was shattered when human prejudice led to betrayal, allowing the castle to be sacked and most of the clan to be destroyed, leaving only six adult survivors and a rookery of unhatched eggs. A subsequent misunderstanding during the clan's retaliation and rescue mission resulted in the clan being magically frozen in stone, with the curse destined to lift only when the "castle rises above the clouds." For a thousand years, the castle lay abandoned, and the clan remained cursed. In 1994, a wealthy billionaire named David Xanatos purchased the castle and relocated it to Manhattan, placing it atop the Eyrie Building.
